Allen Barra |

Born in Birmingham, Allen Barra is best known for his own column in the Wall Street Journal. He also writes for Salon.com and occasionally for the Village Voice. He is a frequent contributor to The New York Times and is also heard regularly on Major League Baseball Radio.
While Allen's previous baseball book, Clearing the Bases, touched on a wide range of subjects, his latest collection of essays, Brushbacks and Knockdowns: The Greatest Baseball Debates of Two Centuries explores issues at much greater length.
In Inventing Wyatt Earp: His Life and Many Legends, he does an admirable job of discounting the stories and outright lies told by Earp's contemporaries by using firsthand accounts and newspaper stories of the time. Readers who grew up with the legend of Wyatt Earp, both in literature and in film, will be intrigued by Allen's comprehensive and detailed dismantling of the popular myths surrounding this figure.
In Big Play: Barra Tackles Football, settles debates, compares greats, and dispels myths about football history. It's the perfect complement to Clearing the Bases.
The Last Coach, is without doubt the best biography of Paul "Bear" Bryant ever written. Barra is able to distill, without fear or favor, the crucial aspects of Bryant's personality. Barra upholds his status as the greatest football coach in the history of the game, but he does not flinch from discussing the less agreeable parts of his character.Through it all, Bryant's influence has not only endured but prevailed as his former players and assistants continue to define the best in not only college but professional football.
Yogi Berra: Eternal Yankee - Yogi Berra is one of the most popular former athletes in American history, and the most-quoted American since Abraham Lincoln. The gripping biography of the legendary Hall-of-Famer is replete with n early 100 photos and countless Yogi-isms, offering hilarious insights into many of baseball's greatest moments.
Coming in July, 2010, Rickwood Field: A Century in America's Oldest Ballpark - The extraordinary social history of Rickwood Field becomes the story of baseball itself, gloriously evoked for the centennial of America's oldest ballpark.
