Anne George

Anne George was born in Montgomery. The former school teacher was our biggest selling author, and we're proud to say she began her signing tours at the Booksmith when the first Sister Series novel was published, and continued to kick-off her nationwide tour at our store with each new title. That's even before she won the Agatha, naming her the best first mystery novelist in the United States.

Anne George appeared almost every week on The Birmingham News bestseller list since its inception, and on more than one occasion every title made it. She sold over a million copies of her mysteries, but she was also a Pulitzer nominated poet and former Alabama Poet of the Year.

Her book of poetry, The Map That Lies Between Us: New and Collected Poems 1980-2000, became the biggest selling poetry title in the Booksmith's history. It was named "Book of the Year" by the Alabama Society of Poets.

Anne George's last mystery, Murder Boogies With Elvis, was released in July 2001. We hosted a magnificent celebration with her entire family and 300 fans.

Anne George's books include the following:

Murder Carries a Torch
Murder Shoots the Bull
Murder Gets a Life
Murder Makes Waves
Murder Runs in the Family
Murder on a Bad Hair Day
Murder on a Girls' Night Out
Murder Boogies with Elvis
This One and Magic Life
Some of It Is True
Spraying Under the Bed for Wolves
Wild Goose Chase
The Map That Lies Between Us: New and Collected Poems

We normally only feature living Alabama writers with books in print in this section. However, because of the very special relationship we've had with Anne George, we are continuing to remember her with this tribute. Anne George died on March 14, 2001. She is gone, but will never be forgotten.

Rick Bragg in the Movies

Even though you weren’t able to attend the September 26, 2011, sold-out world premiere of Alabama’s Rick Bragg: Out of the Dirt, here’s your opportunity to view the entire movie at home, as well as much bonus footage not seen in the original documentary.

Listen in on distinguished Alabamaians, local friends and family tell inside tales on Rick as a child and award-winning best-selling author. Rick also gives his life’s philosophy in many scenes. Find out about his mother’s poetry; hear his aunt tell of dressing him as a girl when he was a tot. If ever there was a priceless gift, this is it.

You may order the two DVD (22.95) set through our secure, encrypted link Here
