Jack Sacco |
Jack Sacco is an author, director, and composer living in Los Angeles. He has written, produced and directed several documentaries, including The Shroud of Turin.
Perhaps Jack's greatest achievement is Where the Birds Never Sing: The True Story of the 92nd Signal Battalion and the Liberation of Dachau, a dramatic and moving account of his father's experiences in World War II.
In October 1942, barely out of high school, Joe Sacco, a first generation son of Sicilian immigrants who had settled in rural Alabama, was drafted to fight the Nazis. This is not your ordinary war story. Sacco's battalion provided essential communications data to various advancing military units, and were involved in several of the most important battles of the war, including Cherbourg, St. Lo, the Falaise Gap, Rozay, Troyes, and Neufchateau, the drive to liberate Paris, and the famous Battle of the Bulge. Among the worst of a continous series of gruesome experiences was their involvement in the liberation of the Nazi death camp at Dachau, where they witnessed the absolute depravity of Hitler's regime. This encounter with pure evil crystallized the reason they were called upon to serve. Sacco's book shows how the extraordinary conditions of war can cause men to discover courage they never knew they had, and to learn the meaning of friendship and the value and fragility of life.
