book content

VICKSBURG tells the story of Grant's year-long campaign to take this important Southern city, which was the Confederacy's last stronghold on the mighty Mississippi. Eventually, Grant succeeded in using a siege and blockage to force the city to capitulate, which was a turning point in both the American Civil War and the cultural history of Mississippi as the victory freed nearly a quarter million slaves in the state.
