THE WATER DANCER is a gorgeously written work of magical realism that balances the horrors of slavery against the fantastical. The protagonist Hiram escapes and joins a guerilla cell planning to return to the plantation and liberate his family still in bondage. This character could have been imagined from the minds of Stephen King and Toni Morrison.
