THE NIGHT WATCHMAN tells the story of Thomas Wazhashk, a night watchman at a factory near the Turtle Mountain Reservation as well as a Chippewa Council member, and his fight to defeat a 1953 bill from Congress that will destroy the land and the culture of Native Americans across the country. Thomas is based on Erdrich's real life grandfather, who was also a night watchman and traveled to Washington D.C. to speak to Congress directly about the real-life bill. And of course, the book itself is beautifully penned, with Erdrich's deft prose and flair for populating her world full of deep and interesting characters.
